Connecting People to Jesus Christ

Getting Connected

Welcome to Southside Baptist Church!

Southside Baptist Church has a long and rich history in Spartanburg, SC. The church was organized in 1908 with 114 charter members. Through the years, the church has grown in membership and added to its facilities. Our church has from the beginning been a cooperating member of the Southern Baptist Convention. We desire to remain faithful to our strong traditions as Baptist while striving to be progressive in expanding our ministries and programs.

We want His heart to be our mission.  One discovers the heart of Christ by knowing Him personally through salvation. Salvation is the gift of God to those who confess their faith in Jesus Christ and believe in their heart that God has raised Him from the dead. (Romans 10:9) We also discover his heart through His Word, which is contained in the Bible.

Two passages are at the heart of our ministries.

  • One is Matthew 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen" (NKJ)
  • The second passage is Matthew 22:37-39 "Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" (NKJ) These passages form the foundation for our worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism.
We believe that the essentials of being church can be summed up in these words:  CONNECT, GROW, SERVE, GO!
  • CONNECT - We connect with God as we love Him back in daily worship. We connect to one another as members of God’s family, relating in Christ-like love through fellowship.
  • GROW - We are committed to becoming like Jesus Christ in thought, word and deed through a life-long process of discipleship.
  • SERVE - We seek to use of our gifts, talents, time, and experiences to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of others through ministry.
  • GO - We intentionally seek opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community and our world.
Our church is centered in the heart of Spartanburg. However, our mission is not limited to reaching those in close proximity to us. It is our desire and commitment to partner with other Christians locally and around the world to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all people. Jesus said, "... you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8 NKJ) Southside provides many opportunities for Christians of all ages to experience "hands on" missions in our local area and in far away places such as Guatemala.

It is our hope and prayer that God will lead you to become part of the Southside family where you can discover the heart of Christ and fulfill His mission for your life. Please let us know of any way we may be of service to you.

What Is a Community Group?

A Community Group is made up of 10-14 people who meet weekly to share life together through Bible study, encouragement, prayer and service opportunities. Each group is led by a facilitator that guides the discussion and reinforces the teaching objectives. A typical meeting lasts for an hour and a half.

3 Reasons Why You Should Join a Community Group

  1. You we created for community. Build relationships essential to being a part of the body of Christ.
  2. You we given a desire to grow. Utilize the studies to grow in faith and knowledge of God & His Kingdom.
  3. You were gifted to serve to community and world. Each group will serve together on a regular basis to share God’s love and story with the community.

How Long Does A Group Last?

Each Community Group session lasts 8-12 weeks. Basically, we’ve broken the year into 4 quarters or sessions. At the end of each quarter, you have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group, or even taking a break. Most groups stay together throughout the entire year. However, groups do not meet June through August, though some may continue to meet informally or socially through the summer.

What Will We Study?

Traditionally, all groups will start the fall semester with the same study to help you select a group based on the members and not the curriculum. We believe sharing life together ios more important than impacting Biblical information, although both are needed for transformational growth. After the first series studies are chosen by the group participants as guided by the church staff. Our goal is to provide a range of topical studies that allow for personal growth in all areas of life.

When and Where Do These Groups Meet?

Most of our groups meet on the church campus on Sunday nights at 5:30pm. We do have groups meeting off-campus in different areas of our community and on different nights.

How Do I Sign Up?

Church wide sign‑ups begin at the start of each new session (August and January). You can also sign up before or after any weekend worship service, by calling the church office. Our Education Minister, James Nugent,  will be happy to help you find just the right group for you. Those who are new to the church (start attending in the middle of a session) can sign up and join any group that has openings without waiting for the start of a new session.
